'Free liver diseases detection camp organised by NIMS Hospital on August 15

A free liver diseases detection camp was organised by NIMS Hospital on August 15, as part of the hospital acquiring the latest Fibroscan machine, which helps in assessing early liver damage using ultrasound technology, without the need for a painful needle biopsy. Actor Suresh Gopi inaugurated the camp.

Dr. Jayakumar, who led an awareness session on liver diseases, spoke about the main reasons for liver diseases and how the use of alcohol led to liver damage.

He said that over 48 per cent of the men in Kerala between the ages of 33 and 46 were habitual or regular users of alcohol and that these people were at high risk of contracting liver cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions within seven years of alcohol use. About 850 persons attended the medical camp, out of which 67 persons were newly detected to be suffering from liver cirrhosis. These patients were allowed various subsidised treatment benefits by NIMS Liver Institute. About 350 persons were tested for Hepatitis B and C free of cost at the camp. Those who attended the camp through the registration process were offered liver scan at the subsidised rate of Rs.3,000. They were also allowed a discount of 20 per cent in the blood tests done for assessing liver damage and ultrasound scans, a press release issued by NIMS said.
